In classical Gnosticism (an early esoteric movement), the Demiurge—often named Yaldabaoth, Saklas, or Samael—is a blind, arrogant, lesser deity. He created the physical universe, mistakenly believing he was the ultimate Supreme Being. He famously declares, "I am God, and there is no other beside me". The Demiurge is "exposed" when his illusion of absolute control is shattered.
In ancient Gnosticism, Jesus and the Demiurge (Yaldabaoth) are half-brothers. Both were created through the agency of Sophia (Wisdom), but from entirely different origins. Jesus was an emanation of the spiritual Pleroma, while the Demiurge was the product of Sophia’s ignorant, unassisted desire.
